The other day,on a casual chat with a friend,I found out almost each and every girl has been told at least one myth regarding menstruation and that has been either shared between friends or has been passed down upon by generations. Which is why I thought of comming up with this post. I mean what can be a better platform than a personal blog to share your views.. I am including whatever I have come across till date ..Please feel free to share any other myth /misconception you have come across...
In simple terms each month/at regular cyclical interval our uterus shades of some amount of cells along with blood, mucus, some enzymes n bacteria.
When our ovaries produce eggs, our uterus prepares itself to receive the product of conception, aka the baby. Prepares= multiplication in layers of cells of the uterus to produce a cushion like enviorment .When there's a no conception/fertillization doesn't occur..it sheds.
Myth 1- The Menstrual blood is impure.
The term ain't exactly Impure per se. The main content is mucus and epithelial cells, parts of endometrium, enzymes. To bulid up the cushion like thing in your uterus all these are needed and as we all know blood provides/carries oxygen and nutrition to all cells of our body.Hence, blood vessels grow into this cell cushion. When there's shedding of the cushion.the blood vessels get disrupted and sheds too.The blood is same as you get from cuts in other parts of the body. But before the actual shedding starts ,all the contents and along with bacteria present in our genito-urinary tract..mixes up to present as a dark/altered blood and sometimes with clots.
Myth 2 - The girl is untouchable/impure,prohibited fro visiting/participating in religious activities
Just because you are bleeding doesn't mean you are impure. In earlier days, when people had zero knowledge about menstruation, thought this was kind of some punishment by Gods or,in a good way may be wanted to take the girls some rest during this 4-5 days. But practically nowadays this doesn't make any sense. The most important thing is to maintain proper hygine yourself.
Myth 3- If the girl touches some one,the person would get contaminated by bacteria/micro organism, she is shedding
Duh! Ok.You don't have a disease which is spread on contacts with intact skin.
Myth 4- Menstruating girls should not take bath
A warm bath would relax the contracting muscles of your uterus and whole body, refresh you and "clean your impurities"
Myth 5- Menstruating girls should not exercise.
Exercising would improve blood circulation in your body.So don't skip it.If you are having heavy periods or feeling bad,go on for lighter one's.Pranayam and yoga are your friend .
Myth 6- Menstrual blood smells bad
Blood just smells like blood. If you don't change your sanitary napkins /tampoms/undergarments regularly, that may cause buildup and facilitate growth of bacteria causing not only bad odour but also lead to vaginal infections
Myth 7- Diarrhea/Loose motion always comes along Menses
This is not a myth per se. What happens is when your uterus contracts and relaxes (it's kinda spasmodic movement, you get your cramps because of such movements) while shedding of excess cells and debris ,it conveys a direct pressure on to your rectum which is just placed behind the uterus.Hence resulting in a frequent loo visit
Myth 8- Prohibition of eating particular foods.
Eat whatever you like. Some say dairy products or citrus foods are bad in those days..but they have got no scientific basis. If you are on some kind of medication (other than ocp's or one's prescribed by your gynaec) please take them regularly.Don't skip.
Myth 9- All women have terrible periods with lot of pain, disabling normal day to day activity
Most of the women have a normal period with some amount of abdominal cramps and pain, which is mainly on the first 2-3 days,But few do have heavy flow / more pain.
Myth 10- All women have bad mood during mentruation.
Not all women experience PMS symptoms or the same symptoms. You can't explain all women's moods by being "that time of the month". Women are just as capable during menses as at any other time, they are not mentally fragile.
Myth 11- No Sex during mentruation
If both partners are ok with it,there's no harm in having sexual relationship during periods.
Myth 12- Women getting scanty/ irregular periods are abnormal/infertile
The length/duration/ amount of your period is not an absolute indicator of your fertility. There are various other causes with numerous other symtomps and thousand other tests to see if you are able to conceive or not
Myth 13- Delaying period now and then with medication is not a big deal.
It is a big deal. you should not take hormonal supplements to delay your dates now and then.
Myths 14- Why is oral contraceptive pill adviced to me.I don't have regular periods.
That is exactly why you need external hormonal contol over your body.Mostly girls suffering from PCOD are given OCP's.That is to regulate the estrogen-progesterone balance, the bleeding you get then is not "menstruation:per se,BUT what is called ad "withdrawal bleeding" Few cycles of ocp use and withdrawal bleeding has been found to be beneficial in PCOD patients
Myth 15-A pregnant women never bleeds
There may be occassional spotting/bleeding during pregnancy. That is not menstruation and may need immediate medical attention
Myth 16- Periods become normal just after child birth
Nope, there's a gap of about 3 months after delivery before your periods resume in most cases. This is not a sure shot but often acts as a natural contraceptive method(owing to breast feeding)
Myth 17- You can't get pregnant when you are menstruating.
Our body is not an automated pre programmed machine. There are variations.Though the chances are rare but yes,you can get pregnant while you are menstruating,as ovulation can occur anytime, more so if your periods are not regular.
Myth 18- You can't get pregnant before first menstruation/menarche.
You can, though very rare but won't nullify the chances,as ovulation starts before actuall menstruation and you can get fertillized
PS-Same goes with menopausal women. You can get fertilized even when you think your menopausal. But,remember if you >45-50 yrs of age and your periods have stopped long back, and suddenlu you notice spotting/bleeding.please consult your doctor asap
Myth 19- You should have your periods once in a month.
A mentraul cycle is of 28days in average. But this varies from person to person and various other physical and emotional factors also take a major role on regulating your cycles.Generally this can range from 25-31 days.If you are stressed there may be delayed period,or if you are anorexic, weak or suffering from ill health then too the cycle may get altered.
Myth 20-I loose litres of bllod during my periods
The duration of mentruation is about 4-5 days and the amount of blood loss is estimated to be 20 to 80 ml with an average of 35ml.Nearly 70% of the total blood loss occurs in the first two days
Hope you liked it ! Thanks for reading :)

What is Mensturation?
As per definition, "Menstruation is the visible manifestation of cyclic physiologic uterine bleeding due to shedding of endometrium following invisible interplay of hormones mainly through hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis"In simple terms each month/at regular cyclical interval our uterus shades of some amount of cells along with blood, mucus, some enzymes n bacteria.
When our ovaries produce eggs, our uterus prepares itself to receive the product of conception, aka the baby. Prepares= multiplication in layers of cells of the uterus to produce a cushion like enviorment .When there's a no conception/fertillization doesn't occur..it sheds.

nice post... so many myths.. my myths were busted when i was in college and read all about this in the course books ... :) :)
ReplyDeletethats great Niesha.. :)
Deletewonderful! :) down south thrs another practice that girls are not allowed to touch pickles during thr menstrual cycle.. they say the pickles wud get spoiled!! duh.. can u believe it! sick people!
ReplyDeleteyeah i mentioned that..ppl say about restriction of citrusy stuffs like pickle n all..duh !
Deletecan it be that it increases the blood flow or something instead of the other way round???? or, may be that eating something spicy might not be good during that time for the body itself more than anything else....I guess hinduism is scientific enough for all the myths...only that they have been misconstrued through the generations.
Deleteumm..am not sure bout increse blood flow or stuff like that..but if it's increasing blood flow in our body then it should be good to take lot of pickles LOL..Dunno y they are restricted :/
Deleteare nahi...I meant the menstural blood flow!!! some foods do that because they increase the body temperature internally which is not supposed to be good but I don't know if it has any relation to periods...
DeleteAwesome post Sukanya. Seriously so many are there. You don't what the little girls go through in so called orthodox families. Its is worse down south as much as I have heard. Earlier certain restrictions were made to women during periods only to make them take rest those 4 or 5 days. But later generations have changed the whole scenario. Luckily I have the sweetest and smartest granny in the world and so I dint not go through so much trouble like my other girls in the family did :)
ReplyDeleteDo more health posts, would love to read them and surely will be an eye opener for many :)
wow! that's so nice... thnkfully my ma being a gynaec i didn't hv much probs either..only later while in school or college and now in hospital i get to know these weird concepts :|
DeleteI know, I came to about many of these from college only
Deleteso true, Indu...apparently, here, we have this big girl ceremony too when the girl first gets her periods...that would be so embarassing!!! I am so glad that I wasn't brought up here :D
Deletehaww..first period and a ceremony !!!! God..thats gross :| :|
Deletevery informative post suku!! infact i agree with all of them...in some part of villages girls are not allowed to touch a growing plant r water them..they say the plant would die ... funny to hear but they still stick to their strategy na..
ReplyDelete:)
haww..not to touch a growing plant..it's just so ridiculous na ? :X
Deleteonce wen i was around 14 yrs i plucked a fruit from a tree in our village.. the girl who accompanied me got all nervous as i was in my periods and that the tree is going to die. I being a little girl got scared and reported it to my mum teary eyed asking her to get them a new sapling :D.. my mum laughed like crazy n explained things.. even now wen v visit d village my mum use to tease me.. ha ha .. stupid ppl.. btw... nice article.. i hopped to ur page from IMBB.. and I'm glad...
DeleteThnx Rajalakshmi am glad you liked it..Stay around ! :)
Deletenice informative post Doc..liked it :)
ReplyDeletethnx Pooja :)
DeleteHi sukanya :) xtremely helpful post.. i know girls are restricted from going near tulsi, thankfully i have an open minded family.. i want to contact you regarding my health, but i'm in two minds :-/ i will mail u soon, hope u'l b able to help me swts :) Godbless
ReplyDeleteNp Ups feel free to mail..I will surely try to help u <3
DeleteVery informative! thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteam glad you liked it Priyanka :)
Deletewow...i added this to my bookmarks :)
ReplyDeleteThnx Bids <3
DeleteIn down south...Girls are locked for those 5days and during the 1st period..they take a bath with milk and put new clothes n are being asked to touch their dad's feet coz it means that the girl has grown up!
ReplyDeletei have even heard that the woman who never gets periods, is not a real woman!
and she is a she-woman or sum crap like dat! :/
pathetic myths we indians have!
If some one doesn't get periods there may be so many causes for that.i agree they may not be "real women" per se..but nless otherwise medicolegally proved..its bad to put a stigma on anyone like that... Indians are to best i think with inventing myths n superstitions :-/
Deletewow sukanya, very well written and informative post :), keep up the good work :)
ReplyDeletethnx Kumkum :)
DeleteThumbs up for this article sukanya! This solved many of my doubts which i could nt ask anyone!!!
ReplyDeleteAm glad if it helped you :)
DeleteGreat post...very informative!
ReplyDeletethnx Rakshanda :)
DeleteWonderful post sweetheart! Loved reading everything! I am having irregular periods! :( My periods these days last for 13-14 days, like can you give any reason for that, it would be of great help!
ReplyDeleteManya....If you feel that theres overbleeding or if ur period is lasting for 13-14 days like you said..Please visit a doctor soon...coz..its really important....
DeleteTo control ur irregular period, try eating dry fruits, dates etc.. before a week of the expectant time... If you start eating date syrup or dry fruits.. .This problem will be sorted out....
Taps irregular periods with a such a long duration is an abnormal uterine bleeding. termed as Dysfunctional uterine bleeding or to be more specific this seems menorrhagia.
DeletePlease consult with your gynaecologist asap. Causes can be many. But in your case this can be a endocrinal one.
other causes to list are many..broadly as pelvic lesions, some systemic diseases, blood dyscrasia or even an emotional disturbance may be a cause.
Thanks a lot to both of you! I really need to check a Gynecologist soon!
Deletewelcome dear <3
DeleteVery informative post. I have severe BP drop during periods, like severe fainting on spot kind of BP drop. I am taking precaution in terms of drinking salted lime water..
ReplyDeleteOpal, because of the loss of blood and some other factors may cause this temporary drop in bp. Salt water in moderation is a good way.
DeleteDon' worry much :)
nice post :))
ReplyDeletethnx Renji :)
Deleteya i heard a lot abt all this myth ... but i don't believe myself... in north especially in marwaris... my friend who is marwari told that wen they are in periods they don't enter kitchen... they have to wash there bucket and mug after bath not to touch pickle and many more stupid beliefs...but i guess ppl now understand and dont follow all this..but still there a lot of ppl who believe in this myth abt peiods...
ReplyDeleteYeah you get to hear some or the other still into practice :|
DeleteSukanya hats off dear
ReplyDeleteit's such an useful post to all the girls esp to teenagers
awesome dear
Thanx Vish..Am glad if it helps :)
DeleteAm not sure abt the Myth 16 Sukanya . . . Sometimes theres no gap of even a month b4 the periods starts after the delivery.
ReplyDeleteAfter delivery, you bleed for a period of time which goes on for more than 2 weeks and after that some people theres a long gap b4 ur mensuration starts but for some like me, the mensuration starts at once.
Just because you aren't mensurating after your delivery doesn't mean that it is a natural contraceptive method. There's always the chance that you'll get pregnant even before you've had your first period. I've known ppl who have got pregnant even b4 their first period starts after delivery.

hi Suna
Deletethnx for bringing up the point.i said it as a natural contraceptive method because of a medical term we have called "Lactational Amenorhhea"
This Lactational Amenorhea is considered as natural contraceptive method because of the hyperestrogenic state and anovulation. The extent of protection is more pronounced in amenorhic mothers than those who have started menstruating
Immedietly after delivery ,the process of formimg milk in mother starts..Most commonly it is seen,if the woman does not breast feed her baby, the mensturation returns by 6th week following delivery(40% cases) and 12th week in rest 80% cases. In non lactating mothers ovulation may occur as early as 4 wks after delivery.
A woman who is exclusively breast feeding, the contraceptive protection is about 98% upto 6 months post partum. However ovulation may occur in about 1/3 rd patients.Contraceptive methods are hence advised.
According to D.C .Dutta textbook of gynaecology (5th ed.pg-458) and obstetrics (6th ed. pg 148,535).Will definitely check out the links you have suggested.
Ps- the initial bleeding is called lochia.which is seen immediately after delivery.this continues for weeks in three stages, lochia rubra, rlochia serosa and lochia alba
DeleteSukanya, that was really a good one. Rather this is really a good one! There are so many myths related to menstruation and yes, even I wonder, how come a natural thing can be declared as 'impure' and what not!
ReplyDeleteI tired arguing so much, but people, rather women don;t even like to think otherwise. I became so disgruntles, ami ar anjali diyi na, bhaifota diyi na! Oi ko9yekbarer poriprekkhyite! Moreover, period talk is such a taboo here! I simply feel exasperated!
I understand..but feel miserable when I have to miss the Astami anjali n barir Laxmi puja Anjali.. :(
Deletehi...very nice and useful post...my mother in law is very open minded, she never gave any kind of hard time during periods....but she told me that her mother in law is very strict ....she doesn't allow her to enter kitchen, pooja room, even she was not allowed to touch feet of elders during periods and also sharing same bed with her husband....:(
ReplyDeletethnx Puja and issi soch ko to badalna h na ? :/ its ridiculous on wat is imposed on girls which has got no real scientifically justifiable basis :|
DeleteI know coz I have seen my bhabhi get the same treatment and I so hate it!!! I mean its natural but what's bad in it????
DeleteIt was a really useful post :)

thnx Laura... am following u <3
DeleteGreat post!!! Can't understand why people believe in crap like this!! The most horrid part is when you hear educated women talking like that.
ReplyDeleteI had a couple of friends who believed in myth 2 & 4 & my first reaction was shock on hearing that. You just kinda don't expect 'urban, modern' girls to think like that. I tried explaining to them how it was a myth & completely baseless but they somehow linked those concepts to religion & took offence to what I was trying to explain. Since then I've stopped explaining things to people unless I really know that the person has a scientific bend of mind or has enough sense to listen & understand!!
totally agree with you Gauri..it's really disheartening ..religious background phir bhi man sakte hai but wat bout the bath thing..doesn't they feel eww without bathing for days ! common tht's totally not making any sense na? :/
Deletebut why not have bath, I mean it makes one feel fresh and less sluggish, right???
Deleteright .... !
DeleteAwesome post Sukanya...Great compilation..loved reading every bit of it.
ReplyDeleteI suffer from PCOD and OCPs have proved really helpful :)

thnx Deepskikha..am glad if it helped :)
DeleteThanks sweetie, I just followed back! Please also check my amazing GIVEAWAY, you can win a beautiful leather clutch:)
ReplyDeleteI will dear :)
Deleteactually the girls are stopped from doing any work is because they require complete rest and that's the reason everything is prohibited but now it is taken in entirely other terms of impurity and such!!! that's fairly irritating to me when I am told I shouldn't visit temples and such...but, yes, they should definitely go light on exercises...not all yoga positions should also be done but pranayam is just fine!!! even cardios shouldn't be done is what I have heard.
ReplyDeletebye, I don't know about moods...I do feel that my moods do get very varying during the particular time and I feel too sluggish!!! but, then, you are right, women are entitled to them :D
LOL..yeah...actually pre menstrual syndrome /pms accounts to some extent of mood changes.. :D
DeleteInformative one Sukanya, tht too from a doc :).loved it.......Actually The mentrual cycle takes about 1.5 yrs to stabilise after a pregnancy ....and for the body to become normal again

DeleteGreat post.. And even I find that not going to a religious place while menstruating myth is nonsense !!!
ReplyDeletethnx nitika :) I feel the same too..grr :(
DeleteWonderful post Sukanya and i believe so necessary,to change the way we look at it!!!!! 'Menarche' is the most difficult and the strangest change which occurs to a young girl's body and brings with it so many unknown fears and psychological changes.......so i believe we should strive for both mental n physical health of a woman by discussing these issues and help them understand the difference between a myth n a fact!!!
ReplyDeletevery well done....
Thank you so much :)
