Few months back on my visit to the TBS store read here , i was looking for a decent hair serum for my weird hair type(oily scalp, dry hair, wavy curls ..blah blah blah..) when I spotted this cute little shoe polish type thing sitting pretty on the shelf ...other than the packaging, the mention of coconut made me pick this up ( I am big time coconut fan :P )
I was not at all satisfied with the answers of SA's at the store regarding what the product was actually for ..as in,was it a styling cream/leave on serum/how to use it..etc..the SA was staring at me with a blank face :| :|
The only thing which still made me go for this was the mention of "all hair types"..So,back home i browsed onto the body shop usa website and found this one being listed under the hair treatment category.

In this last two months I tried several permutation combinations on how to use it..here they go...
- It worked well, when I applied on my wet hair after shower..scrunched a bit and voila! my curls were better defined without weighing my hair down..unlike any other styling sprays/gels.It thus serves as a leave on conditioner too this way :) I use it this way everytime I wash my hair
- It can be used as a pre-wash treatment..like add a big dollop on your hair (Not Scalp)..keep for 10-15mins.wash off with your shampoo..you can skip the conditioner. this serves as a quick fix to your oiling regimen (But,I don't go for this much.I prefer my good ol' regular coconut oil and a nice champi ! :P )
- As mentioned in the instructions,it can be also used as a leave on quick fix just by rubbing onto dry hair . I would recommend this for those who have extremely dry, rough ,freezy hair. For oily hair girls ..or one's like me who have dry hair ends..you can apply this onto the hair ends if you feel. tames away the freeze and smoothens your hair!
The main trick on using the body shop coconut hair shine- you have HAVE to get the amount right baby! if you use too much this may weigh your hair down leaving it greasy and attracting dust, grime and not so flattering attention !
For my 'little below shoulder' length moderately thin hair.. I just need 1-2(one) finger swirl of the product...then,rub it into my palms..and spread along the length of my hair, specially on the hair ends.
What I Like about The Body Shop Coconut Shine-
- Can be used as a pre-wash/post wash hair treatment
- In case pf pre wash,it can be removed completely with a shampoo rinse..no greasiness felt afterwards.Unless you have severely dry, damaged hair you can skip the conditioner
- In case of post wash, swirl a little bit of the product onto your fingers, apply onto wet hair, scrunch a bit ..your natural curls are more defined
- you need a very little of the product ,so 50gms may last more than a year even if used on regular basis
- gives a nice soft healthy shine to your hair
- moisturizes dry,damaged/chemically treated hair(goodness of coconut oil and organic beeswax)
- frizz n flyaways are totally under your control
- no rough,dry/sticky hair as hair styling gels.sprays/creams. no need to shampoo it off asap as with chemical sprays.
- has a mild coconut-y smell- which lingers on for some time..but nothing OTT or like coconut hair oils we use.
- no animal testing
| this much is sufficient for my hair length ! |
What I didn't like about The body shop coconut shine-
- In hot and humid summers, this has a tendency to melt and turn gooey.store it in refrigerator.
- conatains parabens as preservatives( that's not as harmfull as we think and is definitely not a major con for me,but as some of you may be concerned am mentioning it here)
- Price- thank God it lasts long!
- you have to be very very careful regarding the amount you use.. if you use more,it will make your hair limp .
My rating- 4/5 ( this is my styling cream cum leave on conditioner/hair serum at one go..I have no other reason to search for anything else unless i get bored of the coconut fragnance! )
I think I would like to use it as a styling gel to tam my hair ends :), I have similar hair profile as your.. oily scalp and dry hair, but I must say you have really great hair :)
ReplyDeletethnx Divya :) yes you can use it that way..if you got curls this would enhance them beautifully..
